German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has warned that any easing of oil sanctions on Russia by the US — in order to tackle surging energy costs caused by the conflict in the Middle East — would be a mistake. Speaking on a visit to Norway, Merz said any such move would help fund Moscow's ongoing war against Ukraine, and should be avoided.
